Is it possible to have costs per item per site location or bin?

Posted on by 1,515

In GP2010 is it possible to set costs per item per site location (or bin)? I am working with a client that has different costs for the same item depending on whiche site/location they store the item. For example: They have part #12345 in site/location FG with a cost of $500.00, they also store that part in site/location RMA with a cost of $0.00, they may also store that part in site/location CST with a cost of $350.00.

Is it possible to set the cost value for the item to have a different cost based on the location or site where it is being stored?

Thank you,

Deb

James, if you're looking for a partner for potential development, please keep my company in mind - www.ibisinc.com.  We have a tight relationship with Microsoft and can handle any and all development projects.

    Thanks, Frank

    Hey Leslie,

Using single numbers is an option, albeit a bit of a messy one.

Have you seen it put into production?

    Hi Frank,

We're considering doing it ourselves, but it might not be economical.

I've reached out to a few partners to see if there's something out there.

I'm still surprised its not there out of the box.

    James,

I also haven't seen anything that will allow what you to do this using a single item number.

I sure thought there was a 3rd party app for this James, but I can't find one.  Sounds like a good development project for someone . . .

I've come up against the same issue and was wondering if anybody has developed a solution. It seems like an option that should be there.

We need to use average costing, and have different item costs depending on the site the item is in. And we can't use lots to do it.

So - does anybody know of any add-ons that have been developed to handle this?

The SOP screen is going to pull whatever is in the current cost field. This number is not relevant to the transaction. The actual cost is determined when the invoice is posted. You would probably be better off to change your SOP setup such that the current cost number is not copied onto the SOP document.

The problem with lots and different prices at different sites is the transfer of goods between sites.  What if you want site A to cost $5000, and Site B to cost $0.  Then you transfer goods from site A to Site B?

The best way to manage differerent costs is to use different part numbers.  I don't know what your situation is but in some cases parts are provided by a customer at no charge to be used in the manufacturing of a finished item.  If you MUST keep these items separate so the different costs are applied to the consuming transaction, you must have different part numbers.

All of the valuation methods and how they work are documented in our Inventory Control Techniques book for GP

I have tested the method suggested by Dan and it does appear to work.  Thank you.

The one thing I found confusing is that the cost displayed on the sales transaction entry screen does not change based on what lot you selected.  However, when you post, it does use the correct cost.
