Chunk file is not prompting after placing in GP route folder

Hello all,

We have critical production issue, please help on this.

I have done some modifications to reports in GP(I login via remote desktop connection to server). But my end users are not getting any modifications in their desktop clients(they are having GP on their own laptop/desktop).

So I tried to import the reports via customization maintenance window, but getting error as unable to open customization dictionary and no users logged in at that time except me.

Again I tried to place a chunk file in the route folder of GP in server, after placing chunk file if once we open GP it should prompt for new code included.... but it is not prompting.

I make sure that gp route folder,DYNAMICS.SET,CHUNK file all are not read

Thanks for your help in advance

Regards

Mahathi

    Hi Mahathi

You have two issues so lets deal with the easiest first.

Chunk file not loading new code.

Be sure to right click on the Dynamics GP icon and select Run as Administrator on the first login when new code is present.  You should be prompted to include new code.

Now lets talk about your reports issue.

Is your reports.dic file in a shared location so that all users point to the same dictionary or are users running separate reports.dic files?  You can determine this by opening the Dynamics.set file and seeing where the path for reports.dic is pointing to.

Now to answer why you are getting an error when importing modified reports using Customization Maintenance is because there is a user who has a lock on the reports.dic file.

If a user doesn't exit out of Dynamics GP correctly for example you delete their login in the ACTIVITY table, there will still be a lock on the file.

What I usually do is reboot the server/file share to clear the locks.  A reboot always does wonders. This will clear the locks

Check your dex.ini file for AutoInstallChunks switch,  may be it is set for 'bot to prompt and add the code'. If there is this switch in your dex.ini and it is true then your code is updated.

Another issue could be because of some issue in chunk, try to completely remove your product from GP by removing it's reference from Dynamics.set file and produt dictionary from gp folder and then copying chunk inside GP folder and login with 'sa' user by selecting the 'Run as administrator' option.

If I understand this you are trying to share the Reports.dic file that is on the server and that you want to allow all other users to access?

If that is the case then it is best to

    1. ensure that the Reports.dic file is located in a 'shared' folder - DynReports (as example)

    2. from the Administration tab, find and open, Edit Launch file on each workstation

    3. Click on the Dynamics Line - first one in the grid

    4. in the bottom of the screen there is a Path Folder, click on the folder and locate the Shared folder from step 1

    Repeat this for all workstations

This should then point all the users to the same Reports.dic file - so next time you make a change it will be available to all users.

    Hi Bill,

Thank you for your reply,Yes Reports.dic file is on shared location on server.

but server GP reports.dic is located in one path and all users reports.dic file located to another path

so as per my understanding if i replace the users reports.dic file with the server GP reports.dic then changes will reflect in end user desktop clients right?

    Hi jeffrey,

    Thank you for your reply,

Reports.dic file in a shared location and all users are pointing to the same dictionary,

but when i try to import reports from user's desktop client i got this error.

i am sure that no users logged in at that time, might be i missed to check out the users locking session in ACTIVITY table.

I have asked my admin to reboot the system, will get back to you soon with the result.

    Regards,

    Mahathi

There are a couple of options here. Try renaming the REPORTS.DIC file into which you are trying to import. If you are blocked then the OS has a lock on that file. Go into Control Panel and the Administrative tools and Computer Management and Shared Folders and Open Files. If you see REPORTS.DIC there remove the lock. A server reboot would do the same thing.  You could also import into a REPORTS.DIC file that is kept locally and copy that entire file over the shared version. Again if you get blocked you need to clear the open file.

Hi Almas,Thank you for the suggestion.

I have checked the DEX.INI ,it is set for "FALSE".

for another issue chunk it self not crated any product in Dynamics.SET file or in GP.Even i tried to enter product details in Dynamics.Set file manually and tried then it is showing unable to read "Created(Whatever i have given name)"dictionary error.

i created chunk in a proper way ,do i need to work around anywhere else?

I am facing the same problem for GP 2018. I have created CNK file and copied in GP folder and tried to run as Administrator but it's not extracting the chunk file and there is no message. It directly open GP login screen.
