Adding (Auto Creating) Multiple New items to a Matrix that already exists.

Posted on by 10

Looking for some help with a matrix issue. I think I understand them fairly well, but ran into something that I'm not sure about.

My client is a NEW install of POS 2009 and they sell t-shirts. We decided to use the matrix feature to manage many of their items, primarily because it auto creates the items for them, as well as other reporting and management features.

So we setup some Dimensions for a particular t-shirt. We used a Dimension for the Design and one for the Size. When we setup the options we wanted and clicked the create items button, the database was immediately populated with all the design and size options based on what we had setup. That seemed to work perfectly. The problem arrises when we want to add more items to the style and have them auto create.

My understanding is that you can create new items in the items screen and add them to the style or matrix manually, but my client did not like that idea. It was too tedious and slow. For example, if they add a new design, they would have to add a new item for each size that design comes in and then add all those new items to the matrix.

Here is what we tried. We opened an item from the existing style or matrix and then clicked on the Matrix tab. From there, we click the Edit button which takes us to the Dimension window (We added the new design to the dimension already). We then use the magnifying glass to update the attributes for the dimension so we could see our new design in the list. We then remove everything from the list except for the new design. Now we have the new design in the first dimension and the size attributes in the second dimension.

We then click the Change Format button so we can change the format for the item number and the description. We are including the Design Code in the item number to avoid duplicates. Then we click out of that screen and click the Create Items button.

When we click the Create Items button, all the new items we want to add are automatically created, but some of the items (generally the last ones we worked on) are highlighted in Red (indicating they would be removed from the style). Of course we don't want the highlighted items removed from the style so we click cancel and don't save anything. However, if we go right back in and do the exact same procedures, it works correctly.

What am I missing. Is there a better way to bulk add or auto create items from a matrix that already exists? Is the proper procedure to simply add the items manually and then add them to the matrix or style?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely

Ryan Nicley
