    Dear mohana,

Actually i want to create a portal where the customers will login with their credentials and can check the item's status/inventory.

Customers are outsider so dont want to provide the web client access.

why do you want to reinvent the wheel as it is already existing as webclient.

you can create permission sets and different login/user types to access the pages what they need.

if it is just about customer list and inventory then you can try this solution

For this time its just about the customer list and item inventory but in future we are planning to show the customer entries details like invoices, outstanding orders, payments etc.

I have checked the same on web client also but we have more than 350+ customers and some customers are foreign customers. So we can not create every customer as  a user.
