Custom Reports Using Fetch CRM

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

Hi all,

I'm trying to design a custom report for CRM online, using Visual Studios. I'm using the links on this page as my primary resource: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn920273.aspx

All I'm trying to do is create a report that has multiple tabs, with each tab pulling data from a different entity. I don't really understand coding or programming, but I understand enough that I am able to put the report together using sample codes and XML queries of advanced finds.

The problem is, I can't figure out how to get "Fetch CRM" as an option in Visual Studio. I've spent hours of research looking for a walk through, and I can't find anything that explains how to connect VS with CRM, so that "Fetch CRM" is an available data source for reports.

Do I need to run "SetupBIDSExtensions"? If so, the set up sends an error message that I must reboot before running the setup, and the same message appears after I reboot.

Any advice/recommendations to fix or workaround the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Yem94,

The SetupBIDSExtensions needs to be installed on your target machine, as this is what gives you the ability to select FetchXML as a data source option.

Which version of Visual Studio are you running? You will need to ensure that its one of the versions listed on the download page for the Report Authoring Extension:

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Also, is SQL Server Data Tools installed on your machine?

If any of the above doesn't work, then please can you share the error message you are getting so we can advise further?

    Regards

    Joe

You need to install the "Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 Report Authoring Extension"

    Full details and downloads here:

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Once installed successfully, you will have the option in Visual Studio/SQL Data Tools to connect to CRM and use FetchXML as your data sources.

The Dynamics 365 SDK also has details and information to create, modify and publish CRM reports:

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh547453.aspx

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers

I'm using VS 2015 Community. It looks like they're not offering earlier versions on their website without a MSDN subscription. Do you know of any ways around this?

    Thanks

    Hi Yem94,

In which case, it looks like that VS 2015 Community is not supported for the Report Authoring Extensions.

You can download Visual Studio 2012 Express from the link below, which should be compatible with the above:

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Try downloading, installing and then running the Report Authoring Extensions setup again and then let us know how you get on.

    Regards

    Joe

You need "Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012".

This link, along with the CRM report authoring extensions, should give you what you need.

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

    Cheers

My hyperlink isn't working, try a Google search for "Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012" to get the download.

You need "Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012".

Install that first, then Report Authoring Extension.
