Stupid question, are you using SQL Express version by any chance-?  If so, make sure SQL protocol TCP/IP is enabled. Also make sure SQL Server Browser service is running.  I understand the ODBC test passes, but make sure your ODBC connection is not using 'Integrated Windows Authentication", and make sure there are no default databases assigned to the ODBC.

And last but not least, do you think the ports on the server are either being used by some other service OR the ports are maybe being blocked by a FW-?  Stop any security services, and try again.

    Hi Sean,

You'll hit here a big problem related to the encryption algorythm that is used by GP and SQL 2008... The Native SQL client that you use from the client workstation can connect to the server with the password where it was created.. not  to the other one. Do a search accross the Microsoft KB, you'll be able to find about the encryption of the password which uses the Server's name in the algorythm...

I'll try to find the article if I have some time.

    Sean,

Based on your description, I am assuming client1 connects to server2 via rdp, then you go into GP on server2?  If so and you are able to connect on server2 as 'sa', but not another GP user, that would suggest your ODBC is not named exactly the same on server2 as it is on server1, where you created the user.

To test this - log into GP on server 2 as 'sa' and create a brand new GP user.  Now log into GP as that new user on server2 - should work with no problem.  Now try logging into GP as that new user on server1 - should not work.

The fix is to create a new ODBC on server2 with the same exact name as the ODBC on server1.
