Subscription management for contacts with multiple email addresses

Posted on by 55
Hi, I'm wondering how subscription lists work with contacts who have multiple email addresses? I assume that in marketing email Summary tab I can choose which email field to use with send out. But what happens if contact receives an email, navigates to subscription center and uses another email address to manage his/hers subscriptions? Also with subscription lists, when sending communication to dynamic segments, do I intersect it with a subscription list or how do I make sure I only communicate with those who have subscribed to specific content? Thanks!

    Hi Elisa,

Yes, it follows the email address in the subscription center.

    Thanks,

    Megan

Thanks!  If CRM updates automatically based on subscription page, does it follow which email address field it updates? If email is sent to 'preferred email address' instead of 'emailaddress1', will it update 'preferred email address' field? Thanks!

Thanks again for all your answers.

Maybe the confusion here is that we just started using MS Marketing and we really don't yet have any subscription data yet. To start collecting it, we should set up Subscription center.

Are unsubscribes stored somewhere or will an unsubscription just remove that contact from a subscription list?

I'm wondering if I create a subscription list for monthly newsletters or events where I would collect all subscriptions regarding this topic. If I then have an event for only people in a specific area, I cannot really use that subscription list as a segment, as the invitation email would be sent to all interested in events- regardless of their location. Do I then use the subscription list and intersect it with a segment for contacts in a specific city?

    Hi elisak,

Subscription lists are for use in subscription centers - there is more information here.  Segments are used to identify the Marketing audience for a customer journey.  And the contact for the email typed in to the subscription center is the contact who will be updated with the preferences.

    Thanks,

    Megan

    Hi Elisak,

    Thanks for reaching out!!

Yes, As per my understanding the email address in CRM updates based on the ID filled in the Email Field of the subscription center.

So, dynamic segment is list of contacts selected based on your criteria whereas, Subscription list is list containing users who opted for particular services like newsletter.

I hope this answers your question.

    Regards,

    Vivek Singh

RE: Subscription management for contacts with multiple email addresses

    Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I have a few more questions regarding this:

    1. So does the email address in CRM update based on what has been typed into email field in Subscription center?

    2. But can you please explain the difference between segments and subscription lists, if subscription lists are used as segments? When would I use a dynamic segment?

    Thanks!

    Best regards,

    Elisa

    Hi elisak,

    For question 1:

    As official doc said:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customer-engagement/marketing/set-up-subscription-center#test-your-subscription-center

The only way most people will be able to open the subscription center is by selecting a link sent to them in a marketing email from a customer journey, and links such as these include an ID that lets the subscription center know which contact has requested the page.

So the contact email address info will be updated if he had changed the previous.

    For question 2:

You can set your Segment source to Subscription marketing list when creating a customer journey.

You could also take the verified answer in this question as reference:

    Hope those would help.
