Refreshable Excel report performance issues

I've generally found that Excel reports take a second or two to load data. That said, I do have one customer where this takes longer than normal. A few questions:

1) If you were troubleshooting refreshable Excel report performance, where would you start? At the client or the server?

2) I've searched the internet for related articles but I don't see anything. Has anyone came across any articles with related content?

3) Am I correct in assuming the issue is probably related to how powerful the client PC's are?

A little bit of background - the database is pretty large. They use the manufacturing, distribution and financial series and they have roughly 30,000 BOMs.

    Michael,

I generally see this when data connections have become bloated or aren't well restricted. The size of the database is irrelvant (except as how it relates to general server performance).

Grab the query out of excel and drop it into SSMS. How quickly does the query execute? If the query is quick start looking at the formulas in excel to see if the calculations client side are slowing things down. Often recreating the formulas in SQL will drastically improve performance.

Another potential slowdown is using too broad of a query. I have recreated a number of excel reports and by minimizing the items in the underlying SQL view has led to drastically faster refreshes.

Hopefully this covers all of your questions.

    Regards,

    Kirk

I've seem this issue when the client PC doesn't have too much RAM (less than 8GB). For data intense workbooks the more ram the better.
