Customer is merging with another company - needs to bring that company database into their current dynamics database.

Posted on by 665

I have a customer that is merging two companies together.  They are going to take the purchased company (let's call it the TOM company) and move it into their current GP configuration as a new company.

So in their existing environment they have:

DYNAMICS

-COMPANYA

-COMPANYB

In the purchased company they have:

DYNAMICS

-TOM

-JERRY

They are planning on merging data from JERRY into TOM, then taking TOM and moving into existing environment so it will look like:

DYNAMICS

-COMPANYA

-COMPANYB

-TOM

The account frameworks are the same in both dynamics databases...I was thinking about creating the "TOM" company in the current data set, then do a "live to test" restore of that company into this set.  Any thoughts on a better way to do this?

Thank you!

Mark - we ended up doing the "live to test" restore route where we created the company then restored the one over from the other company.  It worked really well, but you must keep in mind the SP versions of all products installed.  It's especially important to confirm that you've installed the products from the new server onto the old one prior to migrating, otherwise you can run into trouble there.  This customer wasn't using MC, so I can't speak to that.

Hi Peter did you achieve the objective? The reason I ask is that we have a customer with the same issue however they use multi currency in both implementations and I wondered if your plan was a success or not?

Good thoughts everyone!  I love the dynamics community!

The versions will be exactly the same.  I will check the installed products.  Also goo d point about the SQL users, although they should all be brought over into the new company as logins.

I was planning on using integration manager to merge JERRY into TOM.  We are bringing some master records over (customers, vendors, items) but that's pretty much it.

    Peter,

    A few additional thoughts/questions:

    - How are you planning on merging JERRY into TOM?

    - Dan's point about making sure the versions and SP levels match up is a very important one.  To take it one step further you may also want to investigate the products installed/used.  Some won't make a difference, others, like AA, could cause trouble if not in both places and may need to be removed first if not actually used.

    - You will need to clean up the SQL users in the restored TOM database.

I would also validate versions.   Make sure on the same version and SP level.

    Sounds reasonable to me Peter.

    Good luck,
