FRx to Management Reporter - Is it worth it?

Posted on by 820

Is it worth migrating from FRx to Management Reporter for a company that has pretty sophisticated FRx reports and uses AA?   They are currently running a test environment upgrade from GP 10 to GP 2010 R2.  They are interested in using Management Reporter mostly because of the FRx not being able to on a 64bit machine.  I am not sure Management Reporter is up to par with FRx.  Can anyone give me some insight into this?

Thank you!

Tammy

Thank you all for your responses!  Some very good information and suggestions in here.  We have decided to install MR in the NEW Test environment after the full upgrade in early December.  We will let them run MR and FRx side by side there and give them ample time to test and learn, while we wait for the release in February.

Thank you again for all your input.  :-)

Re: FRx to Management Reporter - Is it worth it?

I had over 125 reports and using AA on those reports as well as currency translations and consolidations.    I had one issue because one of my companies did not define the segments the same way that all the others had and that tripped me up, but once I realigned everything  in Great PlainsI then re-migrated the reports and they came over.  And yes, you can easily re-migrate.

I am finding that I can get better information out of AA then I was able to before.  It took me a little while to setup my currency translation and get that working right (we had previously been using Frx to do the currency translation) and the only small issue I have is that we had to add the average since Frx used to calculate that for you and it is off by less then a dollar in most cases.  I was a very strong user and trainer on FRx (former consultant), but I'm finding that I like MR better.  The reports take a little longer to run (but in minutes) and I'm sure that will be fixed in the next couple of releases.

And if you find things you don't like, put them in connect and let them know and you will probably see if in the next release.  They already have scheduled that the accounts will show on reports the way they used to.  Right now it goes Account (55221), Sub (000), Dept (HR*), LOB (220), Company (GA) but that is getting changed in February with the new FP.

I am running everything side by side right now and checking all the reports, the users are itching to get their hands on it, and it is nice.  I did find that if I wanted something with all accounts for just Dept (HR) you just have to put a * in the account field and then Dept (HR*) and that is all I need not more ?????.  Then one thing I had to look for was way to put in the trees.  It did not bring over the accounts.  And basically you just had to go into each dimension and use the &&&& and the ??? just like you used to put put it in previously

You can also run Management Reporter and FRx side-by-side if you want to begin migrating reports and evaluate hands-on if there are any feature gaps that would prevent you from using it. There will be some effort in migrating reports and setting up the new system, but there are also new features that you may want to consider upgrading for.

Otherwise Management Reporter 2012 will be released in the Spring if you prefer to wait for our next release that addresses a few of the remaining FRx feature gaps.

    Thanks

We have choosen to keep our more sophisticated FRx clients on FRx and wait for MR to 'catch up' to the current functionality in FRx (multicurrency, emailing reports, etc.).  We have been successful with FRx installs on 64-bit workstations (requires a 32-bit ODBC connection, just like GP).

I would do a search on this forum for Management Reporter issues - there are lots of them.  If it were me, I'd wait another year or so until some of the bugs are worked out and all the functionality is there.  The next release of MR is due out in Spring 2012.

FRx is being retired in the next two or three years so they will need to upgrade at some point.

I've moved a couple of clients over to MR and they haven't lost much in the move. Emailing of reports is missing but is meant to be back in the next version.

The main thing to watch for is what won't migrate over to MR in the Migration Wizard; support.microsoft.com/.../2425087
