Use Business Rule to copy data from one field to another?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi guys,

is it possible to use business rules just once in order to copy data from one field to another? My use case: I have a field with type single line of text and want to change it to multiple line of text. Because I can't change the type directly, I have to create a new field. But I need the information that was entered in the old field.

Can I use the business rule for this copy paste action or is there a recommended way for this case?

Regards,

dlo

Hi dlo, I wouldn't recommend to use business rules for this task of data cleansing / using a new field. You could use an On Demand Workflow instead for the given entity

condition: If Old Field contains Text

Updates record Action: set New Field with old Field value

You Will need to also create an advanced find view based on the condition, and run the workflow for all the records in that view.

Then you can remove the old field

Business rule runs on onload or onsave of form. Rather than using business rule, use on-demand realtime/background workflow which you can run on multiple records at same time to copy field value to another field

Hope this will solve your issue
