GP 18.3+ upgrades

I'm working on a 2016 to 18.3 + upgrade.   The MBS hot topic site doesn't seem to load so I'm working off some google searches for system requirements

and also documentation @ https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics/s-e/gp/MDGP2018_System_Requirements

From the system requirements, I see that SQL 2019 - 18.2.1013 GP or later

Windows Server 2019 - 18.2.1013 GP or later.

So from what I can tell, I need 2019 for GP 18.2.1013  ?

My issue is, I just did a year end update for GP 2018 at another client, and that version comes back as GP 18.3.1200.   That is on a Server 2016 w/ SQL 2017.

So does that mean I dont need SQL 2019 for 18.2.1013 /18.3 ?

    Hello Michael,

The notes on the system requirement page just states that to use SQL 2019 or Server 2019 you need that version of GP. The 18.2 or .3 versions work on all previously supported versions for GP 2018. This is likely the way it will continue, with newer versions of Windows/SQL being supported on newer versions of 18.X, but older ones still being supported as well. We will note any differences like we did for 2019, just in the other direction, adding something like 18.X or earlier next to Window/SQL versions that are too old to be used with newer GP versions.

Your current setup is fine, and will work with any build of 18

As a note, the hot topics are now found here (this is for 18, previous version are found on the pane on the left):

Got it..  okay, so I wasn't completely wrong.   The IT dept wants 2019, so I would need 18.3 if they want to use SQL 2019 with Server 2019

Any issue with Server 2019 and SQL 2017 ? or it has to be SQL 2019?   Some may have budget to upgrade 1 vs other.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi Michael,

As long as GP has them both listed, GP doesn't care.

The only concern would be if SQL and Windows had any incompatibilities, but that is highly unlikely if they are both listed for the same GP version.

An example here would be server 2012 and SQL 2019:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../hardware-and-software-requirements-for-installing-sql-server-ver15

Basically SQL 2019 wouldn't work on Server 2012, but GP would work on both of them if taken separately.

This all said, Server 2019 and SQL 2017 should be fine together.

    Thanks!
