Fabrikam Sql Exercises

Hello Gp Community

I have been an end user (AP & AR) of GP for five years (used other accounting packages and think Dynamics is the best).

I have recently moved into a support capacity and have been asked to learn SQL, I have picked up the basics from w3schools and done some messing about with the Fabrikam database in sql management studio using the knowledge gained from W3.

However without any real examples of the types of recurring problems how to fix them or just general exercises, I don't really feel like I am progressing my skillset. Does anyone know of any website specifically for Fabrikam that gives you questions and answers for Fabrikam in SQL?

Thanks Joe

There is no website. I think first you need learn about SQL as more detail not only W3Schools and learn GP functional knowledge and table available in GP for master, transactions & setup records. Then create some issues and correct it through SQL.

Based on the real time experience only you can learn more about GP. SQL is common for all the application. So, you should learn about the tables and functional concepts in GP.

    Hope this helps!!!

    Hi Mahmoud.

Many thanks for this I will read through these references and make some notes.

The reason why I asked specifically for Fabrikam exercises was I had seen similar but for Northwind and AndventureWorks.

Again thanks for your concise answer and no doubt in the coming months the dynamics community will become my homepage :D

    Thanks

    Joe

    RE: Fabrikam Sql Exercises

    Hello joeyh

    Welcome to Dynamics GP community

I am quite sure there is plenty of happy moments to come while playing with SQL, especially that you have been experiencing the system and its business process for quite a considerable time.

I never heard of any blog or site which provides SQL exercises for Fabrikam specifically, because the SQL knowledge is the same for Dynamics GP databases regardless of the data (whether it is live or test).

In this essence, I may have a piece of advice in here regarding the patch to consider, getting the SQL knowledge regarding the syntax and how to write is code should not be a big problem for you, instead, you might need to understand the database structure and design on the Dynamics GP tables in general. This will give you the proper know-how and skills in dealing with any upcoming request.

Now to do so, I would advice the following steps:

    • Understanding the Tables names and data flow, this is one of the most important aspects in understanding the database design and data flow across tables. For instance, consider the following examples:
      • table numbers starting with XX1 indicate that the table is work (you already know this, it is the "saved" document) Technically, it is called work
      • Table numbers starting with XX00 indicates a master table (you already know the term as well from a business perspective, it could be a customer, item, vendor record ... etc).
      • Table numbers starting with XX3 indicates a historical data. GL30000 has the journal entries of a closed year (after performing the year end closing)

        >> Reference, a legendary article Data Flow and Table Names

    • Furthermore, you need to have a reference for Dynamics GP tables for each of the common modules like (Purchasing, Sales, AP, AR ...etc)7
      >>Reference, this comes as the best source for Dynamics GP Tables

For me, that would be the basics to start acquiring SQL knowledge for Dynamics GP. Then, your skills will definitely get sharpened as you move on and check the data within these tables. Your experience with the application would help you a lot in understanding how data is being stored in the back end.

Furthermore, you are always welcome to ask any question on Dynamics GP in this forum. Lots of members will be glad to help.

Never hesitate to share any further inquiries,
