Business Central on Cloud to On Premise

Hi,

We are reimplementing Business Central from NAV2013 R2. We are uptodated on BREP. We want to continue with BC on premise. But due to supply chain issue, the hardware will only be delivered 6 to 9 months later by wihch time NAV2013R2 will be out of extended support.

We are thinking of subscribing and doing the test and development and possibly the production in Business Central on Cloud while waiting for the hardware. Thereafter, migrate the database back to on prem using the BREP licensing.

Hence, my question is this technically possible and does it work on a license perspective?

Would appreicate any input.

Technically, this is possible not a slam dunk but possible. Licensing may be another issue. You need to talk to your partner.

If everything is working in the cloud why would you return to on prem and lose the ability to automatically stay current with improvements?

    Hi

I also echo Kim's feedback and question.

Also, if hardware is an issue have you thought about running your BC on-prem on Azure? something like https://demiliani.com/2021/07/30/dynamics-365-business-central-on-premise-and-sql-on-azure-vm-reducing-storage-costs/

this way if your SQL is on azure then maybe you do not need much of hardware and migration will be much easier.

    Hi Kim

Tried as we may to convince management, they still on their own hardware.  It is a traditional family business that having a physical asset in better to control than some virtual thing out there that if there is issue, there is no physical being to talk to.

Hence, if there is no supply chain issue, they would have gone through to ON PREM with the new set of hardware.

So when migrating from Cloud back to on Prem, what key areas we should watch out for? Must the SQL version be identifical? Should be done as bacpac?

    Hi MahGah

My reply to Kim is that the management does not want SaaS or Azure but physical machine on site. Old school, traditional management. We just have to live with it.

Wnat to know what issue or procedure to follow.

    Hi

I see your point. I know of one company that they used on-prem and Azure SQL - VM machine installation and then moved back to on-prem. They thought Azure is not "powerful" enough for them and they did not want to be reliable on internet. They had a help of partner but seems like they were able to switch back from Azure to in-house in one weekend without any issue. But they needed to shut down the business for that weekend and no transaction.

For BC SaaS and on-prem you may need to read about Bridge to Cloud license.

    Hi,

The procedure you will have to follow is pretty much described here.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/dev-itpro/administration/tenant-admin-center-database-export

But personally i would not recommend the approach.

You should put your effort into convincing management to stay in BC Online.

The universal code initiative that you can read more about here https://www.waldo.be/2021/12/23/microsoft-dynamics-365-business-central-universal-code-initiative/ will also potentially increase the cost of running your BC online. And if there is one thing old school mangement understands it is when they can save money .
