Table extension - impact on standard

Hi,

We got an issue when extending the standard table.

We create a table extension, and add some mandatory field. When we test our customization, all good on the custom form. However we did not realize this table is also on other standard forms. So this cause some standard forms issues, the users have to fill in the mandatory field values.

My questions, how to evaluate what the impacts on creating this kind of standard table extensions?

Thanks,

I have the same question (0)

You need to be careful when adding mandatory fields in standard tables. As mentioned, any standard code (in current or upcoming versions) that writes data to this table might now produce invalid data. Same applies to any ISV solution that you might be using.

There could be alternative ways to solve your business requirement. Your new field will only be used in processes that you developed/extended, so one option is to add a check in these processes, and fail the process if the mandatory information is missing. And/or add a "soft validation" in the table to show a warning if user attempts to enter data without specifying value in your field.

There is no magical solution - you must think about what you're doing.

The impact of adding a mandatory field should be pretty clear - users are required to fill in this field, all code creating new records must fill in this field as well and all existing records are invalid (unless you update the data) because that lack values in the mandatory field.

    Hi

You need to check cross-references for the table and analyze the output, table (or any other object) could be used not only on forms but on entities and in code directly and modification like new mandatory field could break a lot.
