Error message when using Payroll Tax Update

Hello

I'm working with a client who has a very restrictive network environment. GP is running on an application server and users use remote desktop to connect. Internet access is almost completely blocked. When running the payroll tax update (Maintenance - US Payroll Updates - Check for tax updates) we receive an "Unhandled exception" error when trying to use the Automatic option. We used the Manual update and the process completed, however we received the same type of "Unhandled exception" error after clicking Finish.

The tax table was updated properly, however the client is trying to understand what type of permissions are needed to run the tax engine? We tried running GP as Administrator and this did not resolve the issue. Does anyone have other suggestions? I did see Terry's blog about updating the DEP with Dynamics - testing this today.

Hello Ron,

Terry's blog (link below) is really the best options for trying to get the update to install:

That said, we don't have a listing of any permissions required. It is important to remember that this is calling various items to actually update SQL and connect to a website, so the permissions can be a bit odd.

Since the update completed, there is likely just some odd issue with the tool attempting to query the server for an update after you complete yours. The network is likely blocking this, and that is where the error is coming from. If the manual update worked, I am not sure there is much of a need to dig deeper.

Best options would be a Fiddler and Procmon to see what is being blocked.

Fiddler:

Download Classic Fiddler from the web: www.telerik.com/.../fiddler

1. Open Fiddler, In Tools->Fiddler Options->HTTPS, check “Decrypt HTTPS traffic”.

Click “Yes” on the prompt for trust Fiddler Root Certificate.

Click “Yes” to install the certificate.

Click “Yes” to confirm.

Click “OK” and “OK” to back.

2. Reproduce the issue

3. Stop Fiddler Trace: File->Capture Traffic F12, Save trace: File->Save>All Sessions. Save the trace out as .saz file

Hi Ron,

I've ran into this error message a few times, and there is no way you can get around applying the payroll tax updates without starting GP in 'Elevated' Admin mode, since the execution of the tax update is an external applications that GP calls within the program directory.

Alternative option would be as Justin suggested, to use the SQL scripts to update the tax tables from the expanded .CAB file (which is just a container holdind the SQL script).
