How to modify custom workflow step in CRM 4.0

I have a custom workflow step in CRM 4.0.  It performs a zip code lookup to determine the county of a lead via geonames.org.  Geonames changed the URL for the zip code lookup so now my workflow is broken.  I need to understand how to modify the code of the custom workflow step to update the URL.

I'm assuming I need to use Visual Studio, but I'm having a difficult time finding where to modify this or any CRM workflow.  I've searched the web only to find blogs and articles about creating a new workflow, nothing about modifying an existing custom one in CRM 4.0.

Can anyone offer any suggestions or advice?  I would have the consultant who built the workflow fix it but they are no longer in business.

Thank you,

Dane

    Dave,

I may be off a bit, but this workflow may fire a plug-in or JavaScript to handle for the  zip code look-up. I suggest you research the steps in the custom workflow. This could require a code editor and if so, (by the way it sounds) a CRM developer.

    Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply.  I think you are exactly right about JavaScript.  I did find a js file that appears to have the code for the lookup and is saved in the ISV folder.  I modified this file changing the old URL to the new one but it is not affecting the workflow.  Is there something that needs to be done to push this updated js to CRM?

I'm an IT professional so you are also right about needing a CRM developer.  I'm taking a stab at this myself before bringing in another consultant.

I have seen and gone through the link you provided but it did not get me anywhere with the existing workflow.  I might be missing something so I will review it again.

    Thank you,

    Dane

    Dane,

(Sorry about the Dave misspelling earlier). If you updated the JS directly it should be fine.

    Try the following:

    1. Make sure you can ping the Zip Code service from the CRM server
    2. Ensure the WF is published
    3. Take a look at the JS to ensure it does not reference a plugin
      1. If so, check if the plugin is still registered
    4. Try to do a publish all (ALERT: Only do this if you know there are NOT any unwanted changes pending IE, should not be published).
