Migrating to Azure

(1) ShareShare

Good day all. I have a client current running Great Plains with a SQL database backend. I am looking for some thoughts on how to migrate to Azure (they do not want Dynamics 365 at this point). Is it best to just build a clean GP server in azure and do a data restore? They would like the database to be stored/managed in AzureSQL or ManagedInstance
any direction or insights are appreciated

The only documentation we have in regards to Dynamics GP and Windows Azure is here: /cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/32/Microsoft-Dynamics-GP-2015-on-Windows-Azure.docx

Dynamics GP is not supported with AzureSQL or any type of SQL as a service.

It's basically installing Dynamics GP and SQL Server on an Azure VM as you normally would, then restoring the existing databases for GP onto that environment.

The documentation goes over this in more detail.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

    Thanks

That's what I have done...  if you want the fork lift option, you can use Azure site recovery and do a fail over on the VM server, shut off site recovery and turn it off.   You'll need to build a temporary process server to migrate the Azure + SQL up for site recovery.   The other way is how you described it, I done it both ways

Now once on azure, how do you plan to log into GP ?  RDS , VPN, etc,  how will you save files, export Management reporter, etc..  all this need to get figure out

As an alternative, you can take a look at Skyvia: skyvia.com/.../replicate-dynamics-crm-to-sql-azure. It offers a no code data integration service and supports both Dynamics and SQL Azure data sources.
