Econnect vs. SQL Table access

Posted on by 35

I'm finding the documentation to be sketchy on eConnect, and am considering direct access to the SQL tables.

My need is to update a few fields in the Sales Order Header and add Tracking numbers.

Can anyone comment on the pros and cons of accessing the tables vs. using Econnect

Just to add to David's thoughts.  One other thing to consider when using SOP, is that there are many summary tables (particularly if you are using inventory as well) that are updated based on SOP headers and lines.  So you want to be very careful when working only with SQL tables.  I highly recommend eConnect as well.

    Take care,

We have an integration to GP that was done using direct table access instead of e-connect (prior to my involvement with the platform)and it has given us nothing but trouble. I strongly recommend that you use e-connect wherever possible. Third party addons don't support econnect unless you code the layer ... econnect is very extensible

Download the eConnect help file it explains all you need to know.

Direct access of the SQL tables is evil and not recommended.  While it is possible, you can very easily make a change that bypasses the business logic of the application.

eConnect will ensure that the business logic is maintained and also provide a level of abstraction between the physical table implementation and your code.
