Unknown error when attempting to restore

We have Dynamics 2010 R2. I can backup a company (affects all companies) with no issues from within Dynamics's Maintenance menu. When I go to restore, I get an "Unknown Error" thrown from Dynamics. (I am on the server and logged in as a Dynamics Admin.) There is no error in the SQL Logs, the Application log, or the System log to go along with this error. I can restore using SQL but does anyone know how I can follow down this error? Has anyone seen it before? Thanks!

The unknown error typically is due to the user that is running the SQL service. Try switching it to local.

Thanks, Jonathan. As I said in my original question (and in the reply right before yours), "I can restore using SQL but does anyone know how I can follow down this error?" so I'm all set with restoring and backups in SQL. If SQL is the way to go, I'll do that. It is good to know that the backup of Dynamics within Dynamics will be removed in future releases. It is a nice feature for the financial controller to have though, when they are about to make a change, test and then they can restore themselves if need be.

This will be removed in future releases Donia. I would get familiar with restoring a backing up databases in SQL.

Thanks, Ian. We had no problems restoring from SQL, it was the restore from within Dynamics that wasn't working. Did you mean put the DB in Single User mode and then restore within Dynamics?

The first thing to do is put the database in single user mode. You can do this by right clicking the database in SQL and selecting properties...somewhere in here you can select single user.

    Then try and restore again.

Afterwards, don't forget to change the setting back to multi user mode.

Let us know if this resolves (usually though SQL will tell you if there are other connections)

    Ian.

Re: Unknown error when attempting to restore

Hi, it mysteriously started working this morning. I was very sure we weren't logged into the company we were trying to restore (we tried to restore multiple companies, so that wouldn't have thrown that error for all of them anyway) We did this over three days with the same error thrown from all companies. The error message had said "Unknown error," no scrolls or more information.

Nothing logged in SQL or Windows. I've never run a DYNSQL log, I'll have to look that up to find out how to do it. Thanks for your help!

    Donia,

I have to ask. Were you logged in to the company you are trying to restore? Can you do a screen shot of the error message and post it? Is there a 'more info' button or a scroll down?

If you run the DYNSQL log does it reveal anything?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

I would run  SQL Profiler when you attempt the next restore and hopefully it will give you an idea of what the issue is.

Yes, it is the SA user. And, I can backup from that same menu, just cannot restore.

What user are you using? I read that you said you are using a Dynamics Admin user... but I am not sure if it is the "sa" user or not. If not, does the same issue happen when using the sa user?
