Will AX update remove customizations?

Hi guys,

I have an AX 2012 R3 dynamics system, which is customized (add functionality, add attributes to a table in the database). If AX updates then do modifications have lost or not?

Thanks for your help.

Regards, HuanDang

    Hi,

I feel you are referring to tables in Ax, if they are customized their can be little change but if the standard tables have customizations, changes might occur. Anyway if you want to upgrade Ax,  there is specific process(es) proposed by Microsoft for code/data upgrade that need to followed to retain the customizations and to avoid any conflicts.

    Thanks,

    Thanks Chaitanya Golla.

If I do not update the AX but update the OS will affect the operation of the AX?

    Hi,

Please check the system(software) requirements of AX2012 R3 to validate the compatability of OS.

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 10 , Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012.

It would be better to follow extension based development approach in AX 2012.

Create custom tables and objects referencing existing artifacts. This would ensure present state needs are achieved and also would prepare you /customer well for D365 upgrade.

    Thanks Rahul Mohta.

    Good answer

Currently, I have added attributes to some tables. So what's wrong with the AX upgrade? Is there any solution to this problem?

    Hi,

I am bit confused with your requirement.Initially you asked about the OS effect on AX and your recent question refers to AX upgrade. Are you planning to perform any AX upgrade (or) are you facing any issues due to AX upgrade?

We can only help you better if you provide us clear details.

    Thanks,

    Chaitanya Golla

The other topic is already marked as resolved for the same problem:

You do not lose customizations since that is in the DB, and applying updates and hotfixes outside of AX (for your OS) can impact the system. Only if you specifically install AX hotfixes will your modelstore, application files, registry etc. get changed.

The correct approach is to back up everything (DB, VM snapshot) before going forward, and any steps which you are not familiar with should be done in a Test/Sandbox environment first.
