Send barcode information into the inventory module SL2011

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi

We are running SL2011 in a light manufacturing application and would like to add barcoding functionality. We have a barcode ISV package that looks good but the vendor needs to be able to send captured information into a SL batch where it can be reviewed, then released as usual. The barcode application will reside outside of SL

Does anyone know where there might be some specific details on how to do something like this? I have looked through the user guides and SDK but don't seem to be finding the proper details.

Thank you

Tom D

You can learn more about transaction import in the SL System Manager user guide (found in the User_Guides folder where SL is installed) so I suggest you start there.  Transaction Import pushes data through the corresponding manual entry screen (e.g., AR Invoice and Memo) so all the edits that are applied during manual entry are also applied during Transaction Import.  The result of a run is an un-released batch that can be viewed before releasing.  You can automate the process but that might be counter-productive to your desire to do integrity checks on the incoming data.

The creation of the CSV file that Transaction Import reads can be a bit complex depending on the screen.  The control macro that you generate for the screen will provide the details of what that CSV file needs to look like.  For example, the AR Invoice and Memo screen has 3 levels (batch, document and detail) so the CSV file needs to supply data for all 3 levels very similar to how you hand enter such a batch.  It is possible that some front-end program might have to be written to take the output of the bar code system to format the data the way it needs to be for the CSV file layout.  This depends on how powerful the bar code software is regarding exporting of data.

Thank you VERY much Rick and Dwight

I think that our ISV would like to end up with a product like Gulfstream or MAXQ but I am very interested in knowing the in's and ou'ts of the transaction import function that Rick suggests.. especially with regard to how automated the import can be made as well as how to audit the data in the CSV file to make sure that it is legit.

    Thank you!!

I am not sure I agree with Dwight's statement (or maybe I do not understand his point).  One of the powerful features in Dynamics SL is the process called transaction import.  That allows you to electronically feed data into any SL screen.  All you have to do is create a CSV file in the proper format and run that through transaction import.  You utilize the control macro generator to create the needed control file and that control file defines the format of the CSV file.  It all works quite easily.  I have several clients that use this capability not only for bar-coded information but also for outside services information that can be put into a CSV file.

There is more specific information on all of this and I can provide some of that but will wait to see if this is a route that you would like to go with this.

Creating the batch in SL and being able to process is the difficult part of the process.  There are a couple DSL ISVs that have already integrated directly with DSL using barcoding.  I believe Gulfstream and MaxQ have products that will do it.
