CRM Dynamics 4.0 - Managing event, attendance tracking and email reminders

Hi CRM Experts, I am new to CRM 4.0 and tasked to implement workshops(Events) in CRM which are conducted by a trainer and attended by many "contacts". I need to maintain contacts' attendance and also require to send email reminders to contacts about the venue and timing. What's the best way to implement such a scenario?

I would like to do this using out of the box functionality if possible.

    What I have done previously is utilize the Campaign, Campaign response and marketing list entity to do this.

    But its not a simple task since it requires you to create new fields on the campaign entity, to utilize the campaign response entity by adding a number of new fields as well as adding new status reasons.
