Performance Testing of AX application

Hi All,

I have a desktop application built on Microsoft dynamics AX 2012. It's a 3 tier application (Front end - desktop UI, AOS(Application object server) middleware and Back end- MS SQL server. I am not able to record this application.I tried to capture the network traffic using Wireshark tool and found that through dcerpc (Remote procedure call) client is communicating with the server.

please suggest how to do the performance testing of the application and which PT tool would be more suitable for it?

How to download trial version of Performance benchmarking software development toolkit for AX as per all the blogs(recommendations). Its not available under MS Lifecycle services.

What kind of application it is? What technologies you used to develop it? How does it communicate with AOS?

What "not able to record" means? What exactly do you want test? For example, UI testing may not be the best approach for testing database scalability.

For reference, there is a similar thread from the same user.

    Hi Martin,

Its a desktop application built on Microsoft dynamics AX 2012.

It's a 3 tier application (Front end - desktop UI, Middleware- AOS(Application object server)  and Back end- MS SQL server.

I want to test the application performance, that we can categorize into two parts:-

    1. What is the response time of RPC calls when client machine communicate with the server.

    2. How much time UI takes to render the response.

Usually client face performance issues during festive season for billing, retails etc. Its a inventory management application. So please help me how to do performance testing of this application? I tried Coded UI, I was able to automate the processes, but want to know that is it the correct way to do performance testing of AX application?

First time I have come across to AX application testing. So help me out to figure out best possible approach and specially PT tool.

    Thanks

I thought you could explain what kind of application you've built. Merely repeating the same words is a waste of time.

Measuring RPC calls it's trivial. Record current time, make a call and record current time again.

Measuring rendering depends on how you actually render GUI. Nevertheless note it's rarely worth doing, because performance problems are usually in DB layer and client/server communication, not in GUI rendering.

Coded UI tests are not primarily intended for performance testing. You can use them, if you want, but they may be too slow large-scale testing, such as simulating 2000 users. So it's again about what you want to test.

    Hi Nisha,

If you want to measure the RPC count and code traversing time during the particular scenario why are you not enabling trace parser tool  to create the RDL file and after that analyzed it which will give you RPC count as well as which method is taking more time to execute and where is the loopholes. You can easily identify and inform to dev team or client.

    Thanks
