Rollback approach CRM 2011

Hi,

We are planning for upgrade from CRM 2011 to CRM 2013, for this activity we are practising the rollback approach from CRM 2013 to CRM 2011.

We have planned for migration approach for upgrade where SQL server will be same, we got new server for CRM 2013 so CRM 2011 server will be the same.

Below is the complete approach we have decided,

Upgrade Approach

1. Take CRM 2011 MSCRM_Config & Org_DB backup.

2. Shutdown CRM 2011 servers.

3. Install CRM 2013 on new server.

4. Upgrade the Organization.

5. Install CRM 2013 Reporting extension on Report server.

6. Install Service pack 1 & roll-up 4.

7. After installation disable the CRM 2011 server from CRM 2013 deployment manager.

Rollback Approach

1. Uninstall CRM 2013 from new server.

2. Uninstall CRM 2013 reporting extension and install CRM 2011 reporting extension & roll-ups in reporting server.

3. Restore the backup of MSCRM_Config & Org_DB (took in step 1)

4. Start CRM 2011 server (shutdown in step 2)

5. Open Deployment manager and check the versions of organization and servers.

6. Access CRM 2011.

If we restore the CRM 2011 DB on SQL server, do we still need to delete and import organization in CRM 2011 Deployment Manager, what if I don't delete and re-import the organization instead restore the CRM 2011 DB backup directly.

Is the above rollback approach is correct? Please let me know.

Regards,
Rahul

If you are doing Point to existing DB Upgrade with new application servers then you can take the backup of Org_MSCRM and MSCRM_Config DB and disable the old servers and start upgrade on the new application server, do not remove the org from OLD server deployment manager, leave it as it is. For rollback approach just restore the database backup taken before upgrade,  disable the new server, enable old CRM server and enable the organization.

In this approach you do not need to re-import the organization.

    Thanks Khaja.

This complete approach is "Point to existing database upgrade" where we will be having new application servers and SQL server would be existing one.

My basic question in rollback approach is, if we restore the CRM 2011 database (MSCRM_CONFIG & MSCRM_ORGNAME DB) backup in SQL server, why do we need to re-import the organization in CRM 2011 deployment manager because in old CRM 2011 DB backup mappings would be already present, so there is no meaning of deleting and re-importing the organization from deployment manager of CRM 2011 application server.

    Hope you understand.

    Rahul

    Hi Rahul,

Once you restore the database you need to re-import the organization in Deployment Manager.

Thats where you will have the mappings issue. If you are using Virtual server for SQL go ahead and take the snapshot of it and restore if it fails.

    Khaja Shaik.

    Hi Rahul,

Can you please mention the SQL server part in this migration. I hope you are using the same SQL server to upgrade from CRM2011 to 13.

If you wanna upgrade it use the existing server or get new servers but degrade option is never possible.

Why u looking for rollback approach? You can use the same new machine for CRM and SQL installation and upgrade it.

Your approach is not clear, confusing and its not possible.

    Please share more information.

    Regards,

    Khaja Shaik.
