As mentioned earlier the only way to do this via a 3rd party integration module. As for 3rd party modules these can be further divided to solutions that are hardware based (need gsm modem, sim, etc) and those that are purely web based (uses an online sms account). You will need to determine which path you intend to take
We tested a few and one of the web based solution we tested was from a vendor SMS for Microsoft Dynamics CRM . Other than that if everything else is not possible and cost is an issue, then you should consider just piping from email to SMS. There are few vendors that offer this off the web

Also note, an SMS message can be sent as an email. For example, if the phone number is on the T Mobile network, you would send an email to 10DIGITPHONENUMBE@tmomail.net. So you could use an OTB Email activity (with a little customization) to accomplish this if you can determine the provider for the number. You can send and receive bulk sms messages from MS CRM if you integrate Ozeki NG SMS Gateway into the system, then you will be able to do what you want.
