Question on Dynamics 365 Solutions

Hi, in my current organization setup. We have settings -- customize the system - entities (also known as default solution) as well as settings -- solutions -- entities (vendor solution).

My understanding of vendor solution is that it adds additional layer on top of the default solutions.

When I edit the entity of my vendors solutions, I notice my change e.g. form field label name is also automatically changed in the form of the default solution.

Moreover, the entities, fields and forms found in my vendors solutions can also be seen in default solution. This leaves me confused whether they are link or duplicated (unlikely).

The final confusion is when I edit a form via form view, it will always call itself default solution. Never once does it appear the name of the vendor solution. Regards

    Hi there!

Okay lets go back to the basics.

Two types of solutions are there : Managed & Unmanaged.

no matter what you have in these two solutions - it will be available on your default solution which is available under customization> customize the system.

ideally you are not supposed to edit the form , add new field, direct from form editor because that will open from the default solution. ( but again even if you make the changes those will reflecting your solutions too.

solutions are not extra layers but it just containers of your customization.

    this will help : crmbook.powerobjects.com/.../solutions

    Hello,

    1. All of your customization wheather done from the default solution or from your custom solution will be part of the base (default solution)

    2. Unless you open any component from your solution specifically it will always open in default solution.

In short, base solution is like a container which will be holding all of your customization, when you create a custom solution you are kind of grouping them logically to make it easy to transfer from one envirnment to another, but it's part of the base solution (default solution) only.

    Hi Colin,

Every environment has a default solution and it has some unique properties. The default solution contains all the solution components available in your environment. Other solutions may include a subset of the solution components visible in the default solution, but the default solution contains all of them.

    For more details, see docs.microsoft.com/.../solutions-overview

    Hope this helps.

    Hello,

In addition I hope below clarification can helps you  -

whether they are link or duplicated (unlikely)

When you create an unmanaged solution, you create a way to group a subset of the available default solutions. The solution components in an unmanaged solution are references to Customizable  solution/Default solutions components in the organization.

By using this smaller set of components you can decide to only include those solution components that are relevant to a particular functionality. This allows for a smaller size package when you export your solution and makes a more manageable set of components. Any components you add to your unmanaged solution are included in the customizable solution components for the system. Unmanaged solution components can be added to multiple unmanaged solutions.

when I edit a form via form view

You can access solution component from default solutions as well as solutions navigation. Only difference is that when you are changing default solutions it means the changes you are doing is impacting whole organization and there is no unmanaged solution reference. When you are opening FORM from FORM view its by default open default solution as your organization might have multiple unmanaged solution and system is not aware which unmanaged solution form you want to modify. Which means changing directly from FORM view is similar changing in default solutions forms.

    Hope this helps.
