Error Connecting Visual Studio To IFD (The authentication endpoint Username was not found on the configured Secure Token Service!)

I have configured IFD for CRM 2013 on my Server running Windows Server 2012 R2.  CRM, Active Directory and ADFS are all on the same server.  It was a struggle but I can now access my CRM organisations fine over the internet.  However I am having a problem authenticating using visual studio.  I connect to the organisation(s) fine but when I try to authenticate I am getting the error "The authentication endpoint Username was not found on the configured Secure Token Service!".  I am suspecting an issue with ADFS but cannot see anything wrong with the configuration.  Can anyone help me to get over this show stopper?

You might try the suggestion here: http://www.interactivewebs.com/blog/index.php/crm-2013/adfsservicestrustmex-returns-503-on-crm-2013-windows-2012-ifd-mex-endpoint-fix/

I've run into a similar issue connecting to a server with CRM and AD FS  on the same box but I can't recall if the error was the same.

Thanks so much Jason.  It was an interesting read and eye opener regarding the actual source of the error.  I then followed the suggested solution to change adfs port by running the powershell command (Set-ADFSProperties –nettcpport 809) and even though I could not authenticate it felt like a success, just because I had spent more or less the whole day just seeing one error message after my fruitless attempts.  I am now getting  a different error [ID3242: The security token could not be authenticated or authorized] but at least I am somewhere different to start from.  It's literally painful to spent so many hours stuck at one point seeing the same error message!
