Cannot print a posting journal ('Unable to start printing' error screen)

Hello

For reports that have multiple reports (e.g. Bank Transactions, where after I post an entry, it spits out a Bank Reconciliation Posting Journal, followed by a General Journal), for every report except for the last one, I am unable to print the page to my printer. (Right now I have to manually print to PDF, and then save it onto my desktop, and print from my desktop, which is a big pain).

I have contacted our GP partner, who thought it was because of redirected printers, but since I added the printer onto the remote computer, I am still having issues.

Weird thing is that I do not have this issue with my TEST company... even though I often get our Network Administrators to help replicate the live company data to the test company whenever necessary... so I would think the settings are the same, but maybe not?

Would really appreciate any help I can get on this one.

Thanks

Are you running this on a Citrix or other Terminal Server environment?

When you encounter this have a look at the Task Manager and see if by chance there is a 'rundll' line still showing in the Process tab.  Reason I mention this, is that I have a client that at rare times GP does the same thing - simply deleting the rundll.exe from this list opens up the printer and all reports start to print just fine.

Update this thread if this does not help.  I have a couple of other ideas for you, but this is the easiest and fastest.

    Hi Bill,

    Running a terminal server environment.

We tried to stop rundll but that didn't seem to solve it. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your prompt reply.

Jeremy, one question I did not ask about was Named Printers.

Do you know if your partner configured your Named Printers for certain reports?

Second question has to do with print reports set up.

     PostingPrintWindow.GIF

Window is found on Administration >> Setup >> Posting - chose Posting

Look for the name of Report that is not printing - start by chosing the SERIES, then ORIGIN - chose ALL - then look at the names of the reports and if there is no check mark by the name of a report then the system will not 'automatically' print the report.  If there is a check mark only by File - then it will by default print only to TEXT file.

Anyway, have a look and let me know.

    Hi Bill,

I'm not aware if our partner configured named printers for certain reports. Is there a way for me to check? We only use 1 printer with GP... not sure if that helps.

Also, under the "SEND TO" columns, what do the 4 icons represent? Most of mine are checked on the 2nd to left box.

Recently I have also tried printing from test company a completed bank reconciliation, and all the items printed... but I frequently update the test company with our live company data, so not sure why it is not working consistently for me in the live company.

    Thanks

Jeremy, can you take a screen shot of your Posting Setup window in the TEST company and the LIVE and post them to this thread.  It will be most helpful.

Jeremy, sorry, clicked submit to soon

Second to left button tells the system to print report to SCREEN.

If you have a report that you want to see, but not on paper that is the option.

If you have a report that you want to see on paper - always - choose the 2nd from right.

You can have different settings in this window on a per company basis and that might explain why they react differently.

    Let me know.

Hi!  Did you ever get any resolution to this problem?  I have a user who is experiencing the same thing.

Also, does anyone know if there is a good way to debug this (for example is there some additional logging information that would help indicate what the underlying problem is)?

RE: Cannot print a posting journal ('Unable to start printing' error screen)

I was working with the user back in May and have just reviewed the notes.

We did not get a posting of the resolution to this problem, but I hope that for the past 8 months the users have been able to make it work.

If you have the same issues in Live and Test - one of the things we did not resolve is 'was there a difference in the Report Printing screens'

The last thing we requested back in May was a copy of the Posting Setup as we know we can have different settings between companies.

    -----

As to why - one of the things that I have found is often replacing the reports.dic file can resolve a number of reporting issues.

To easily do this, make sure (1) all users are out of GP (2) make a copy of the REPORTS.DIC file (3) rename the REPORTS.DIC as REPORTS.old

Launch GP, go to Report Writer and access Microsoft Dynamics then in the Reports window, select IMPORT - browse to the location of the REPORTS.old and import the reports.

    Hope this helps.
