Select Only Certain BOM Components

Hi All,

We have a scenario where we create work orders when repairing products and would like to know if it is possible to create a BOM where we can select any combination of possible components that would be used.

For example:-

Scenario 1

Item 1 is comprised of components A.B,C,D,E

A customer returns item 1 for repair - a work order is created and the BOM selected which will state we need all of the above components, however only component A needs to be replaced.

Scenario 2

Item 1 is comprised of components A.B,C,D,E

A customer returns item 1 for repair - a work order is created and the BOM selected which will state we need all of the above components. However this time components B,D,E need to be replaced.

Currently we just use one BOM so when a work order is placed we have to allow for errors in order to finish production.

Alternatively we will have to create a BOM for each possible combination - which could be alot!!

So just wondering if it is possible to create a BOM with some kind of configuration that will allow you to select only the components required.

Thanks

    Yes!

You can manually create all different versions of the BOM and have them approved. The only active is the one with all products present.

However, what you are explaining, this is exactly what the configurable products (constricted based product master) are for.

But... It is a long way to travel. You would need to read up on this.

I also figure that you will get different route times as well. Also covered by the configurator.

I will look into configurable products and see what I can find as we are trying not to create BOM versions for each scenario as there would be a lot!

The approved BOM Version that gets copied to your Production order can be further maintained for just that production order.  If you catch the production order in a created state, you can delete the Bom lines you don't need.    The same is true of your route.  It should also be maintained on the production order if it has costs associated with it that you do not actually realize in the repair process, or create a repair routing that you copy to these orders.

If you are past created (estimated, scheduled, started, etc) you can zero the quantity on the BOM line.  You will need to re-estimate and re-scheduled the production order.  But this will allow you to report as finished with out consuming items B,C,D,E in scenario 1.  I am assuming this is where you will end up, as a repair operator might not know what they did until after the production order is dropped to the floor / started.    You could  alternatively 0 qty pick and end mark the picking list journal for items BCDE.

Note that this will cause cost variances if you are standard cost.  You might want to consider having the parent item be a product master with a dimension to signify "reworked" or "New".  Then you can have distinct standard cost price records for new vs. repaired units.

I am sure I responded to this previously (but it was on a different forum), anyway:

Create a BOM with all components but with a quantity of 0, and the original item itself with a quantity of 1. You create the repair works order selecting this service BOM, you create the pick list when you know what has been needed - invariably during/after repair. This means you need to hold safety stock of the components as you get no visibility of this, but you naturally would anyway.

Steven - I like that solution with a "repair" bom with qty 0 on the lines and just add that to the production order when you create.

Yes Steven I think you did but I posted it on here also to see if anyone else had any other idea's before I report back! - Will give your suggestiong a try and see how it goes!

    Thanks

The configurator actually created the needed BOMs as it gets a new unique parameter combo, but it is no problem to have many many BOMs in AX.

Stephens idea is also pretty good. I actually use that approach a lot as well.

Can I also suggest doing a small amendment where you in the create production order dialogue have a checkbox for a "service order" (or what you might call it) and then create a new dialogue if this is ticked where you select items from the selected production BOM?
