Is it possible to call a child custom workflow from a custom workflow?
Not tried it yet, just wondering.

I don't think there is any limitation for calling child workflow from code, you can call any workflow using ExecuteWorkflowRequest

No there shouldn't be any issues calling a child workflow. When you say "Child Workflow" this means that the workflow can also be called within another workflow but at the end it is just like another workflow.
You can call it from code just like any other workflow.
