Can anyone aware of GP customization dll file upgrade. The customization was created by VS Tools?

I think, we can not upgrade our GP VS Tolls customization dll files. For this case we need to upgrade our source code with appropriate version references and then build a new dll files.
Note: We can't upgrade our GP dexterity cnk(Chunk) files from earlier dexterity version to new version. Can upgrade source code.
