Are there negatives to enabling Audit History?

I see this isn't enabled by default and you can specify to the very field which you want to audit... I am wondering if there are negatives to enabling this?

Does it slow down the system or have any other negative effects?  We are on-premise.. not sure if there is a difference versus online when it comes to enabling Audit History.

    Hi

As you are on-prem there will be a slight (milliseconds) slowing as it writes to the SQL DB on each save.

My approach is only enable it on items that are business critical - If someone updates Mrs Smiths favourite colour to green does it really matter who done it?

We have enabled this in the past with very little performance impact.  I would suggest only enabling on the fields you really need to audit vs. all fields.

    Thanks,

As well as the small performance overhead on each change, you should consider the space that auditing data will take up. If you audit everything, this will grow reasonably quickly, and can affect the time taken for database maintenance operations. This may not be significant, but should be considered

Note that if you have the Enterprise edition of SQL Server, the audit table will be partitioned, which can help with the maintenance operation performance if you understand SQL partitioning
