When to Process Cubes?

Hi,

Continuation from my problem here https://community.dynamics.com/ax/f/microsoft-dynamics-ax-forum/361192/uknown-values-in-accounts-receivable-cube-custcube, I was able to clear unknown values in cubes by processing all cubes in Dynamic AX initial.

Processing the cubes will update them with data from the online transaction processing (OLTP) database?

I'm not clear on which circumstances do we actually need the process the cubes?

If we want to print Top Customer by YTD sales Report for example (since data source of this report is CustCube), do we need to update these cubes every time we have new sales order records? That'll be like every hour. That doesn't make sense.

Please clarify. Thank you.

    Hi,

Not all reports are based on cubes. Some are indeed. Yet, the main question when to process cubes is when you analyze your data. Do you run the cube based reports or other cube based analysis on an hourly basis? Most of the time I see companies running their cubes over night so that they have 'fresh' data in the morning and can analyze the data from the previous day. These are not 'live' data though but for business leaders that want to analyze their business data this is usually ok. Why is it that you want to process the cube on an hourly basis and why an hour and not let's say every 45 min.? Best regards, Ludwig

    Hi Ludwig,

when I mention hourly, it's just an example because sales are made frequently in a single day.

Plus, normally when we print SSRS reports they will always print live data based on the queries.

So, can I conclude that for whichever data we want to include in a report with cube data source, we must always process the cubes to get the 'latest' data?

For AX2012 and the standard cubes that is correct. Those cubes are not made for analyzing live data. For that purpose you can for example use the Management reporter that has almost live data. With a customer financial dimension in place you can basically circumvent the issues that you currently have with this report. This does of course not work for all cube based reports but for the one you mentioned it should work.

    Best regards

    Ludwig
