Is it ok to keep an D365 item number but make a minor adjustment to name/description?

Is it ok to keep an D365 item number but make a minor adjustment to name/description. Specific case is we are reducing volume from 100L to 950L - I want to keep the same item but update description and BOM to reflect new volume in product. To me this will allow us to minimise any changes to ordering and will allow us to continue to seamlessly track historical sales vs ongoing sales and forecasts (albeit overall volumes of bulk will be 5% less but don’t believe that is significant enough to warrant new item and code).

I have the same question (0)

    Hi Martin,

For the released product, go into the Options tab and use the Record info field to rename it.

    Hi there

Yes, the system will allow you to do this via the Product record. Updating name and description on the product record will automatically flow through to the released product.

    Hi Martin,

If I get you right, you will maintain the same unit of measure for the item, same with other setup and update only the description.

In that case, it is okay. But bear in mind that, the name will be updated even in previous transactions.

Thanks Komi - much appreciated and very important input ref historical transactions. We will actually reduce the volume in the container by 5% so are now considering we will actually create a new item due to the impact on historcial transactions. Thanks for takiing the time to reply. Martin

Exactly, so the best bet is to simply create a new item and create a new BOM.
