Report Writer - cannot duplicate modified report

In Report Writer I am trying to make a copy of an existing modified fixed asset report named “FA Transfers” but it looks like Report Writer will allow me to only have one modified version of this original GP Report. We are using GP 9.

Why are there some GP Reports that can have multiple modified versions and other reports that only allow one modified version? Is this the correct behavior of Report Writer or is there something corrupt with my reports dictionary?

    Hi Greg,

You can only have one official modified version of a standard Dynamics GP report.

In GP you can also have alternate dynamics GP reports. These are reports that exist in other development dictionaries. They are alternate standard reports - ie they can be substituted in GP for a standard report...and of course, they can have modified versions.

You can create a new custom report based on an existing modified report by selecting the report and clicking on 'Duplicate' in the report writer window. But you have to give this a new and unique name. It then becomes a Custom report and not a modified standard one. The difference being that you can substitute the modified report in GP (ie print the modified SOP Blank Invoice Form instead of the Original version), but you cannot substitute a custom report.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Hi Ian,

Thanks for the explanation. I am still a little confused on why I cannot make a duplicate of this modified report. The "Duplicate" button is grayed out when I click on the modified "FA Transfers" report in report writer.  It appears that most modified reports can be duplicated but some cannot. Any idea why?

    Hi Greg,

Sorry, should have mentioned that. You cannot duplicate a modified standard report if there are temporary tables attached to it - so for example, the PO Blank Form cannot be duplicated - the duplicate button is greyed out. I'm not familiar with the report you mention, but its a safe bet that there is a temporary table attached.

To get around this (and have two different modified reports on the same system), you might consider maintaining a second reports dictionary? Each with its own version of the modified report. You could have two icons on your desktop each of which use two different dynamics.set files...and each of which point to a different reports dictionary. In this way, you can have two Modified Standard report layouts.

If you need to maintain two different layouts because they relate to different companies, put a bit of thought into how you can come up with a generic version that defaults stuff based on the company you are in. Even Company Logo's can be calculated based on the Company ID.

    Ian,

This is exactly the information I was looking for!

We will consider the option of using two report dictionaries to solve this problem vs. creating a custom Fixed Asset srs report.

    Thanks for all your help!

After you create the 2 Reports.dic file you can create 2  launch file, every one mapped to one from the modified reports to avoid close and open GP.

I would say to think hard before you run two different launch Icons.  It may be your best solution depending on exactly what you are trying to accomplish, but think of the downfalls.  Especially with a user possibly running the report in one company but having used the different launch Icon.  You can't tell which launch icon you used once you are logged into GP.

Personally, I am a fan of SSRS and the Fixed Asset Tables are pretty basic.  I try any excuse I can to use SSRS over Report Writer just for the simplicity of exporting to Excel when you get your data.
