Hi:

I just read that some barcoding comes with Business Central out of the box.

Is that true?

What does that mean? Barcode already has standard functionality, and there are also customized solutions available.

    Hello John,
Yes, but with a small clarification: Business Central has some barcode support out of the box, mainly through the Business Central mobile app, where users can scan 1D/2D barcodes using the device camera, and through Print Label actions for items, item references, lot numbers, and serial numbers. It also supports barcode scanning for item references and item tracking fields in some pages. But this is not the same as a full advanced warehouse barcode solution; for dedicated handheld scanners/ADCS, Microsoft says you typically need setup and often a partner/device-specific integration.
    Regards,

    Hi,

Yes, that's true. Business Central does have native barcode functionality out of the box.

    What's included:

    • Mobile app barcode scanning (item references, inventory, warehouse activities)

    • Item tracking (serial, lot, package numbers)

    • Print label functionality

    The catch:

These cover basic scanning needs. Advanced warehouse automation, custom barcode formats, or complex scanning workflows usually need customization or a third-party solution.

For most standard scenarios (inventory counts, receiving, basic picking), native barcode scanning works fine.

If you want to understand what's possible for your specific use case, happy to discuss.
