Alternate Parts field

We have recently begun catching up on our inventory.  We have been using the Add Alternate Part function to link differing Part Numbers which indicate the same product.
Normally, this allows us to search and find multiple part numbers under a single part number search (i.e. a Rotary Manifold made by Hitachi which is actually the same manifold from a certain model of Deere.  Using either the Hitachi part number or Deere part number should pull up all the Rotary Manifolds which had the alternate part number added to it).

However, for some reason this isn't working all the time.  Sometimes when we search a part number it pulls up only that specific part, even though it is listed as an alternate part number on other identical parts.  Yet searching under a different alternate part number pulls up all of the parts which contain that part.

Is there something we are missing regarding the use of this function?  Is there a way of ensuring that all part which contain an alternate part number come up in a search?

Any help would be appreciated.

    James,

I don't think you are doing anything wrong, the product catalog in CRM 2011 is a nightmare sometimes. :(

Can you give me an exact example with screenshots, that way I might be able to spot the issue if it's related to user error.

    Thanks.

    Search results:
9107265 pulls up some of the parts (some of the related part numbers):
    Search results:
    9101521 only pulls up itself:

Finally, I included a screen shot which shows an alphabetical search which captures all of the above Part numbers (along with unrelated ones):
What we want to ensure is that any search for a part number which indicates an alternate part number pulls up all the other alternate parts as well.
Let me know if this provides you with any further insight.  I tried to double check all the part numbers and I don't see an error there but maybe I have been staring at part numbers too long :).
    Thanks!

    James,

These screenshots are from a custom CRM solution, do you know who created the solution for you?

If this solution was created by a Microsoft Partner then they would be the best ones to help. If it was created by Microsoft (I.E. Free Template Solution), then you should report the issue at Microsoft Connect:

The whole "Inventory" section does not exist within CRM 2011 out of the box.

    Re: Alternate Parts field

Okay - thanks for the help anyways!  I personally don't know who did the 'customer solution' - I'm the new inventory guy :) but I might know of someone here who does.

At least you have pointed me in the right direction.

    Appreciated.
