We have an issue in GP 2010 where it is trying to contact the Internet for some unknown reason. We noticed that during the delay (sometimes up to three and a half minutes!) the search box in the upper right corner disappeared right before we are able to click in the password box. Until that happens, you can only sit and wait. In our case, we have a proxy server with a couple of configurations depending on who you are logging in as. Most users have a GPO applied that prevents them from changing their proxy server settings because we use transparent proxy in our office buildings.
However, the GP box is in a datacenter where you have to use explicit proxy. With a GPO that prevents changing proxy settings and GP trying to contact the Internet, our users can do nothing until that attempt times out. We've tried using a batch file that sets explicit proxy in the registry and that works great...for administrators on the server. However, normal GP users don't have the necessary privileges to be able to write to the registry, so it fails for them.
What I need is a way to either keep GP from phoning the Internet or a way to set the connect timeout to a couple of seconds at most (preferably globally).
Thanks,
Jim
