Incredibly Long Delay Before Able to Type Password

Posted on by 160

We have an issue in GP 2010 where it is trying to contact the Internet for some unknown reason. We noticed that during the delay (sometimes up to three and a half minutes!) the search box in the upper right corner disappeared right before we are able to click in the password box. Until that happens, you can only sit and wait. In our case, we have a proxy server with a couple of configurations depending on who you are logging in as. Most users have a GPO applied that prevents them from changing their proxy server settings because we use transparent proxy in our office buildings.

However, the GP box is in a datacenter where you have to use explicit proxy. With a GPO that prevents changing proxy settings and GP trying to contact the Internet, our users can do nothing until that attempt times out. We've tried using a batch file that sets explicit proxy in the registry and that works great...for administrators on the server. However, normal GP users don't have the necessary privileges to be able to write to the registry, so it fails for them.

What I need is a way to either keep GP from phoning the Internet or a way to set the connect timeout to a couple of seconds at most (preferably globally).

Thanks,

Jim

Béat - I've marked your answer as verified. It makes a substantial difference in the time it takes before users are able to click in the password box. I really appreciate your help on this.

I'd also like to thank everybody for their input on this. Waiting over 3 minutes before you can type in a password was very painful and my users were ready to come after me with a pitchfork!

    Thanks,

    Jim

Jim - I'm glad it will eventually solve your issue (to confirm)... the next step I would have looked at is to ask you what OS version and Citrix version you're running on (we use XenApp 6.0) to publish your apps. Lync is not installed on our Citrix server, so the start of GP is way faster then the local GP client copies where Lync is deployed for every users...  I must confess that your configuration with proxy settings are not too familiar to me since we don't use them :-)...

Béat - I made the changes you suggested an preliminary testing seems to indicate that it works! I'll let you know what I find out after I have some of my users test it out, but I'm cautiously optimistic that this may have made a dramatic difference!

    Thanks again,

    Jim

Re: Incredibly Long Delay Before Able to Type Password

    Hi Jim,

What about something in the AddIns folder(s)? I had to remove one that was tied to Communicator or Connect or something like that. Are their any AddIns that could be calling out to the Internet?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

Re: Incredibly Long Delay Before Able to Type Password

It's worth a shot. GP is running as a published app in Citrix, so I doubt anything on the user's local machine would have much effect on GP itself. At this point though, I'm willing to see what happens.

Quick note about Citrix: This issue exists whether I run this as a published app or if I login to the server and launch it interactively. The difference between the two as far as this issue is concerned is that I have the rights to set explicit proxy when I'm logged in interactively

    Thanks again,

    Jim

Re: Incredibly Long Delay Before Able to Type Password

    Hi Jim,

Is that SDK deployed on all user's clients ? if so you may still have a delay from GP that wants to load the Communicator libraries to support it... check the folder below of GP called AddIns and try rename the DLL communicatorAPI and CommunicatorPrivate...

    Thanks Béat,

We have the Lync SDK Runtime installed, but we aren't using Lync for IM.

Re: Incredibly Long Delay Before Able to Type Password

    Jim,

By any chances, are you using an IM application like Lync ?... GP 2010 checks for the presence of the Lync 2010 client and fires it up when starting GP... My users are frustrated by the delay this is inducing and can take up to one minute before they can type their password in the login of GP...
