Access Denied. Administrator permissions are needed to use the AXUpdateInstaller. Use an administrator command prompt to complete these tasks.

Trying to install a deployment package from an ISV for the license, I RDP into the DEV environment  (cloud D365 F&O) and running axupdateinstaller -devinstall  from the command prompt

Platform release
Update37 (7.0.5746.35600)
the error I get at the end is I require administrator rights, are they forcing us now to create our own DEV box and therefore set up admin rights to install packages.
I have the same question (0)

    Hi Tim,

What type of environment are you using? Is it Tier1 MS managed environment or cloud-hosted environment?

You can try to apply the package from LCS instead of command line.

    Hi Tim,

If this is a Dev box managed by MS, you can upload the package to LCS > Asset library. You can then deploy it from LCS environment page using Maintain > apply updates.

Hi Tim, if MS management vm, run AXUpdateInstaller.exe via command prompt don't need admin role. but tile-1 RDP is removing for customers at the moment.

so deploy via LCS will be best way.

This is supposed to work without admin. You can file a support ticket for this.

However, as others have pointed out, the tier1 boxes that are Microsoft managed are going away - SOON. There have been two email notices sent out. By November 1 you can no longer deploy new tier1 VMs, December 1st you will lose RDP access, and in January the box will be removed all together. You will need to plan to move to VMs on your own subscriptions. Details in the emails, including how to receive any Azure credits.
