High Availability with GP 2016

Hello,

I have a customer that is interested in High availability (HA) with the GP 2016 databases. I am not finding much documentation on this, and the arcticle on log shipping has not been updated to anything more recent. Is HA a supported configuration with GP, and are there any recommendations or gotcha's with HA and GP?

Regards,

Kayla

RE: High Availability with GP 2016

The only issue we face with failover is the pw resets.  This is a huge roadblock for us with 200 users, failover actually fails.

Oh, for upgrades, I can't say I've seen AlwaysOn cause issues with an upgrade, like Replication does...….

Thanks Derek. Just trying to get confirmation for an upgrade this weekend.

  • RE: High Availability with GP 2016

We haven't seen any specific issues with AlwaysOn and Dynamics GP and its related applications, just mainly one-off issues that come in from time to time via support cases, such as logins not synching on a server after a failover due to the server being on a different subnet or Integration Manager stopping working after a failover, things like that, but nothing that we've seen a case volume enough to suggest there is an actual issue, but more of a setting or something that needs to be tweaked after a failover. That's about it.

Maybe others on this forum will have some experiences they can share...………

    Thanks

    Derek,

I know there's issues with Replication and GP Utilities during an upgrade. Any issues with Always On?

    Thanks,
    Mike

I'm not sure about that specific GP on that specific SQL version, maybe some others here on the forum have and can comment...…...

Do you know if anyone has tried Replication with GP 2015 on SQL 2014?

  • RE: High Availability with GP 2016

    Hello Kayla,

KB 926490 is basically a list of what is supported with Dynamics GP as is the following page:

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Features Supported with Microsoft Dynamics GP

    mbs.microsoft.com/.../MDGP_SQL2014SupportedFeatures

One of the SQL features mentioned is the AlwaysOn feature which we've seen some customers use with Dynamics GP. This guide has two links to documentation about information regarding AlwaysOn for SQL and running it with Dynamics GP.

From the Dynamics GP side, we don't really have any recommendations or steps as it's more SQL functionality and there isn't any setup on the GP side for it, but we've seen customers use Dynamics GP with everything mentioned in these two documents: Replication, Clustering, Mirroring and AlwaysOn, and they all work fine.

The one gotcha I can tell you is that during the upgrade of GP databases, Replication must be turned off, as it prevents Utilities from being able to rename the tables and keys, so that updated versions can be created for those objects, thus the upgrade fails.

Also, if anything adds extra columns to our default GP tables, that will cause the upgrade to fail and potentially the stored procedures as well. Those are the two main issues I've seen with HA features and Dynamics GP.

In regards to AlwaysOn, it works fine in a standard environment, but I've seen at least one case where they had servers on different subnets and that caused issues where the user's passwords needed to be reset, but otherwise it worked fine between servers on the same network.

Hopefully that answers your questions but let me know if you have anything more and I'll try and answer.

    Thank you
