maintaining same item number with multiple versions

Hello All,

Can we have same item number with multiple versions?? For example, 100.100 with rev A and again 100.100 with revision B. I should be able to create production orders simultaniously for both items.

The catch here, I already have huge amount of transactions done from last few years and now we need to activate this feature. I was wondering if we can use item configuration for this, but then what will be status of existing data??

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

If this is a BOM item type, then you have option to use effectivity dates on BOM Version (both can be active). Gets a little complicated in that you have to manage BOM dates in production.  You also can assign a bom id in the  sub-bom field in whatever is calling for this item (sales line, parent production). Works great, but users have to be aware of these assignments. I moved sub-bom field to grid for visibility.

If this is an item item type, you have option to use configurations (inventory dimensions). In this case, you have to choose which version. You can transistion from non-configured to configured by setting "blank issue" allowed on inventory dimension group & dis-allow negative physical.

The To-Increase IEM product includes an additional dimension for this called "Version" to allow this sort of tracking, but you need to turn it on at the outset, it would need development work to update the history.
