I’m using Dynamics 365 online. I have accidentally deleted an Account, which has also deleted the Contact and associated activities. Auditing is turned on and I can see the deleted records in the Audit summary.

Have come across a number of articles online about how to recover accidentally deleted records. These generally refer to recovering your production backup prior to the event, restoring to sandbox, exporting the deleted records and then importing back to production. While this is possible we have a number of customisations at various stages of development in the sandbox which we would need to manage as well.

I did come across the XRMtoolbox Recycle Bin plugin which would appears to be a simpler solution however its not in the plugin store as its statues is rejected in current release.

While I have used the XRMtoolbox I am a bit of a novice. Is it possible to still use the Recycle Bin plugin in some way. Found the BDK.XrmToolBox.RecycleBin on the Github site and downloaded the zip file but I’m not sure how to install this or if that’s even possible. Any help appreciated.

In Dynamics 365 check Settings>Auditing>Audit View Summary. Click on the filter button and then filter by Operation>Delete and check the deleted records you are looking for are there.

Note the Entity the record has been deleted from and the date. In the XRM toolbox, Recycle Bin plugin select the correct entity. Either leave Select User as all user or select the specific user form the list. Check you have the right Date Range and you should be able to select the deleted record and restore it.

Please note in Audit View Summary John Smith was also a Connection to A. Datum Corporation (sample). The Connection was also deleted when the Contact record was deleted.

To recover the Connection (or any other entiry your Contact records is associated to) you need to do this as another step. In my case Select Entity>Connection> Show Deleted Records and then restore the record.

We dont use the Recycle Bin all that often. We try to make redunant records inactive and avoid deleting.

Audit is enabled on mine but when I select "Show Deleted Records" in the Recycle Bin, nothing shows up. I even played around and expanded the date range but still no records show up. Any thoughts?

Hi

Just a quick update. This afternoon I was discussing the XRM toolbox and Recycle Bin plugin with one of our techs. When she opened the plugin store the Recycle Bin plugin appeared in the list.

Under display options she did have the ‘use legacy plugin store’ checked which may explain it suddenly appearing. Either way we were able to install the plugin and recover the deleted record as it is supposed to do.

Thanks for your response. Snapshot looks like it might be an option. Our IT techs are having a closer look at it. They would have preferred an external option like XRMtoolbox Recycle Bin rather than installing a solution within CRM but there does not seem to anything like that available.

Hi,

I am not sure why this particular plugin is not available. They have moved source code from codeplex to github, which should have the latest version. If you download that version you might see the plugin you are looking for.

Hi Parnav

Thanks for your response. I did see this blog when searching. While it goes into detail of how to use the Recycle Bin plugin this is from within the XRMToolbox for which the plugin’ s current statues is rejected (not available). Unless I am misunderstanding this and there is some other way to add the plugin to the Toolbox.

I am trying to work out if this can still be installed/used outside of the XRMToolbox and if so how to go about it. Appreciate your help.
