First time Importing Excel Data (Account & Contacts)

Posted on by 223

Hi,

Never done this so just need some advice.  It's just a reassurance I'm requesting

I've read some blogs to download a Template from Data Management > Templates for Data Import which I have done and copied the relevant information into the columns.  This is as far as I've got

The question is if I upload this file will this overwrite the current information in the application or will I need to export the current information that is in the application, add the new information and then import the updated excel file??

I'll be loading this first into my Dev Environment.

Thanks in advance

Regards

Chris

    Hi Ran,

    Thanks for your reply.

So using the templates which contain all fields and I will only need a selection of these columns. Is it best to delete / remove the columns that will not contain any data and just load the columns that contain data.

These are all new records so keeping data in the three hidden fields will load these as new records?

You say if the hidden columns contain no values new records will be created

I download the Account template and copied over the columns that I have data for.

The size of the from which I copied the data over from is 1,777 KB.  The template file size is reading as 145,751 KB.  I doubled checked to ensure I have added duplicate data in and checked the row numbers are the same which they are.

The original file had more data than I actually required so didn't copy all across.

    Hi Chris,

There are three hidden columns in the downloaded template file, which cannot be deleted. They will determine if there are existing records in the environment or not. If you maintain values in the three columns then records will be updated if other information change. If there are no values in the three columns, then system will create new records.

It will not overwrite the current information, just create new records from your data import file.
