Install Dynamics GP 2015 over Group Policy

Hi,

We would like to push our Dynamics GP package through Group Policy to the clients. I only found some very old articles for Dynamics 9.0, but nothing for the current version.

Is there maybe a document that tells me on how to do that?

Thanks a lot!

Christopher

I would go with one of the following options; installation package, Remote Desktop, or web client.

I understand what you are asking for with the GPO but I do have to agree with Tom that it can make a very complicated process out of something that when done correctly is only about 1/2 hour per machine.

In earlier versions of GP there was the GP Client update - I have not looked at this for some time, but I think that if you had to - this is an option you could look into - it takes the package you create one time manually and then helps you deploy it over the other users workstations.  I used it many years ago to assist when we were doing a 20 machine update and only had about 6 hours of downtime.  It worked - but I have not revisited it for some time.

I think it is much easier for the users to have Dynamics installed locally.

Well, it was my impression already that GP for GP is more complex than with other software. So I guess it take your answers as recommendations to install it manually... :-)

Christopher is there a reason why you want to install on local machines? I'm just curious because you said its only around 5 - 6 work stations, might I make a suggestion and install it on a terminal server, that only requires one install and then all you have to do is manage RDP access. To me this sounds like the easier of the two because you can probably have it all done and installed before you finish creating the Group Policy.

I've seen some overly complex Group Policies and the only reason they were created was for the sheer fact that they could be. Don't get me wrong, GPO is great and can automate a ton of stuff like system access to browser settings for security purposes but I don't know that GP's would be best for GP :)

    Thoughts??

    Hi Bill,

Silent installation sounds good. We would like to push the created package to all users in a specific AD group. Because we already use GPO we thought it would be great to automatically install Dynamics for every member of our finance office.

It's only around five to six workstations, but it still would be a smart solutions if we don't have to do these installations manually - especially as we are in the process of having standardised workstations.

We've already created a client installation package for Dynamics GP and that works great.

Christopher are you looking for a 'silent' installation of GP?

I have in the distant past done this, but in the past 5 or more years not done this process as we find that the installation often needs that personal touch.

Now, having said this, I know that the system provides for an installation package capability but as I recall the big issue is that all UNC and/or drive letter mappings must be the same for all users, as well all the ODBC must be the same.

How many workstations are you having to install onto?  What is the time line for the installation?

Just looking for more conversation on the matter.
