Change a registered serial number after posting a packing slip?

I'll try to be brief yet understandable. The way our system works is simple parts are pulled, staged, packing slips are printed, orders packed then shipped currently we have to ensure all Serialized parts are entered prior to printing the packing slip to consume those specific parts however is there any workaround for this where the registered serial number can be added after the packing slips are produced possibly using a false serial # and adjusting later during the order packing phase so we don't have to assign it in the staging phase. Any advise would be much appreciated as this is causing a delay in printing packing slips and delays our process due to how we pull orders
