BC2ADLS Data Migration Queries

Hello Community

I am exploring options to export Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central data to Azure for reporting and analytics purposes.

  1. I came across the BC2ADLS extension, which appears to support incremental (delta) data exports by capturing new and updated records. Does anyone have documentation, implementation guides, or best practices for setting this up?
  2. Additionally, is there any supported or automated approach to restore or write data back from Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 to Business Central?

Any guidance or relevant resources would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

    Hello,

Yes, BC2ADLS does support incremental exports, including additions/modifications and—with its delete-tracking mechanism—deletions. However, the important point is that Microsoft’s current documentation explicitly classifies bc2adls as an unsupported code sample, so I would be cautious about selecting it as the foundation for a new production analytics architecture. For a new implementation, Microsoft’s supported recommendation is to extract Business Central Online data through standard/custom APIs, use SystemModifiedAt (exposed as lastModifiedDateTime) as the watermark for incremental loads, enable/use read scale-out, and orchestrate the pipeline with something such as Azure Data Factory into ADLS/Fabric. BC2ADLS is still useful to study because its Microsoft repository contains setup, execution, Synapse consolidation, and delta-export examples, but it should be treated as a reference/community solution rather than a supported BC feature.

For the second question, ADLS isn't a Business Central backup/restore mechanism and there is no standard supported "restore from ADLS to BC" operation. If data in the lake needs to flow back to Business Central, build an integration pipeline that reads the lake data and writes through Business Central REST APIs/custom API pages using POST, PATCH, and where appropriate DELETE. For complex transactional scenarios, I would normally load into custom staging tables/API endpoints and let AL execute the BC business validations/posting logic rather than trying to write directly into application tables. For actual disaster recovery/environment restoration, use Business Central's Admin Center restore/backup capabilities, not the data lake.

Hi, the documentation is on GitHub, but be careful which repo. The original microsoft/bc2adls is read-only now. The one that's still maintained is the fork from Bert Verbeek (Bertverbeek4PS/bc2adls), and it also supports Fabric lakehouse. The setup guide is in there.

Setup is not hard. You make an app registration and a storage account, then in BC you pick the tables and fields, and schedule the export with a job queue.

The delta part works on the system fields, so only records changed since last export are sent. Deletes are tracked separately. On the Azure side a Synapse pipeline or a Fabric notebook merges the deltas into the final tables.

Two tips. The first full export of big tables like G/L Entry or Value Entry can take long, so run it out of hours. And export only the fields you really need.

For your second question, no, it's one way only. Nothing supported writes from the lake back into BC. For that you use the APIs, standard or custom API pages, called from Data Factory or Power Automate. A restore from the lake I wouldn't try at all.

Glad to help - follow up if anything is unclear.

►  If this solved it, marking it verified helps others too.
