Options to integrate CRM 2013 online with a desktop client application

Looking at CRM 2013 Online and need to be able to send and receive data with a local desktop client.  What are the best practices for doing so?  Can the JavaScript shell out to an .exe ? What the browser/security limitations?  How can ActiveX scripts be used?
