Unit of Measure on Build of Material's

How do you change the unit of measure on a build of materials? I changed the unit of measure on a few items, and it prompted me to change it in the bill of materials but I can't figure out how to do that. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

In order for that to work for you Sun, you would have to stock the material in feet, not inches.  Wish I had a better answer for you.

For example, we purchase our square tubing by the inch, because we need a little extra for scrap during cuts. So we will cut from inches into feet to make legs for our units. I suppose we could keep them in inches, but for the final product it's just easier to think in feet. All of our drawings for the final product are done in feet because the unit is about 24 feet long.

But in this particular example, what is the material?  And why do you need to change it from inches to feet?

We have square tube, flat bar, and sheet metal mostly - some pipe too.

Welcome to the world of GP.  It takes a long time to learn it, so join the crowd :)

You don't have that option in the Inventory BOM, Sunstone.  What you see is what you get.

However, logic tells me you would be making inches out of feet if you're cutting material, not the other way around.  Is this bar stock? Sheet metal?  Some other shape?

    Hey Frank,

As I'm slowly learning about this software, I found out that we don't have the manufacturing module. We only have the inventory. When I go to Inventory - Cards - Bill of Material, the unit of measure on the right-side of the screen is grayed out.

I'm trying to make my raw metal (which was purchased in inches) switch to feet when it turns into a cut metal. I don't see where I can have it switch over. Does that make any sense?

So if you click on a component in the left (tree view) pane of the BOM Entry window, you're saying the U of M field for that component is grayed out in the right pane?

I've tried doing that, however I can't seem to get the curser to go into the unit of measure. Any other suggestions?

If you're using the Manufacturing module, you have to go into Manufacturing>>Cards>>Bills of Material, select the Bill of Material that contains the item(s) that have changed and select the new Unit of Measure for the item in the right side of the Bills of Material Entry window.
