Hi folks, I have the following questions...

Do I need the Management Reporter Designer and Viewer for running Dynamics SL 2018?

Is Management Reporter required for running Dynamics SL 2018?

Are they integrated components of Dynamics SL 2018 or is it a separate product installation?

How do I know if I have Management Reporter Designer or Viewer installed?

Management Reporter is equivalent to FRx in that it has shortcuts displayed on the SL menu that you may customize to point to the program locations, if you want to launch them from the SL menu. The Management Reporter programs are installed separate from SL. You may choose another financial reporting tool to use with SL in place of MR, but many clients will use it because it is "free", i.e. bundled with SL and not broken out on a separate price list.

Management Reporter uses two SQL databases, one for report definitions, report history, and user security, the other is the "Datamart" containing financial information brought from the SL financial tables that are reformatted and stored in MR's internal structure. Unlike FRx, MR reports pull from their own database. Two services are part of the MR installation, one that keeps the Datamart up to date with info brought over from SL, the other service processes user's financial report requests.

Based on your questions, I'd be surprised if you have Management Reporter installed.

Yes, I'm new to Dynamics SL, recently took over the maintenance role, after the SME left the company.

In SQL, I only see the Soloman (system database) and a user/application database. So what you're saying is that MR would have it's own databases?

I can see and print reports from Dynamics SL, so I assume that is using the SL native reporting tool/feature?

You also mentioned that the MR is free. I was talking to the MS reseller this morning trying to get the annual support renewal price reduced since we only have two end-users. The reseller told me that she can change our current support, the Advantage Plan, to the Enhancement Plan by about half, but doing so would reduce our MR Viewer user license from 40 to 0, MR Designer user license would remain at 8, and the professional user from 19 to 1. Does that make sense to you?

So I just want to make sure that I can still generate reports in PDF format from Dynamics SL without the MR, and that it will use the native reporting tool?

Yes you should be able to generate/export your SL reports in PDF format when you preview reports.
